The difference between the past simple and the imperfect: the past simple expresses a complete action, which has taken place at a particular time (e.g., Pasó tres horas en el baño: ¿he spent three hours in the bath¿). The imperfect, on the action, without specifying its beginning or its end (e.g. ¿Qué decías?: ¿What were you saying?¿; Vivían en Burgos: ¿They lived in Burgos¿.

The past simple endings are as follows:

-ar verbs: stem + -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron.

-er and -ir verbs: stem + í, iste, ió, imos isteis, ieron.

You will notice that certain first person plural forms are the same in the past simple as they are in the present tense. The meaning depends on the context (sometimes, the word ya: (¿already¿) is added before the verb in the past simple.
