Brandy: distilled from the wine of grapes.
Cognac: french brandy
Whisky: distilled from malted grain.
Whiskey: US and Irish spelling for whisky
Rum: made from sugar cane juice, specifically from the molasses.
Vodka: Strong alcoholic drink distilled from rye, etc. with no aging and originally from Russia.
Tequila: Distilled from ‘mescal´, a fermented liquor of the maguey plant, originally from Mexico.
Gin: Distilled from a mash of grains with juniper berries. Plain spirit flavoured with an aromatic.

The generic term for the above-mentioned liquors is ‘spirits´, which means ‘strong alcoholic drinks´. That´s why we talk of wines and spirits as separate items, since wines are not particularly strong.
Beer: alcoholic drink made from malt and flavoured with hops (Sp: lúpulo).
Wine: alcoholic drink made from the fermented juice of grapes (and other fruits, vegetables)
Soft drink: non-alcoholic drink, e.g. fruit juice.
Soda: water or any other flavoured drink with carbon dioxide added to make it bubble.
Liqueur: strong flavoured (usually sweetened) alcoholic drink.
